9:30 a.m.Niaulani Nature Walk - Free Forest Tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Native Species Art Hike-Kohala with Melora Purell, coordinator for the Kohala Watershed Partnership, and Jack Jeffrey, naturalists and wildlife photographer. This unique hike is for amateur and professional artists of all ages who plan to submit artwork for the juried show "Hawai‘i Nei 2010" held June 12 to July 26. The exhibit will feature artwork in any medium that highlights native flora and fauna (those not introduced by humans) found from ridge to reef. Bring water, lunch, and boots and be prepared for wet weather. Limited to 10 participants. Cosponsored by the Three Mountain Alliance and the Volcano Art Center. Free. Offered in celebration of Lei Day and VAC's upcoming Lei Day Festival on May 1, 2010. Learn how to propagate a number of native plants used for lei making in your home garden or landscaping. The workshop includes going into the field to see habitats of selected plants and a lecture/demonstration at Tunison's residential garden to learn more about growing pala’a, palapalai, ohi‘a, ki, maile, pai‘niu and more. $65 (financial aid available) includes cuttings and handout. Join in the creative and cultural sharing of lei-making demonstrations, lei contest and display, hula and ‘ukulele performances, talk-story sessions, guided tours of the native forest and more. Lei contest is open to all ages, and cash prizes are awarded for outstanding entries. Lei entries become part of a silent auction fundraiser for VAC. Contest rules and criteria available on-line.
